Usman Riaz’s animated movie The Glassworker has been submitted as Pakistan’s official entry to the 2025 Oscars. The movie, envisioned within the model of Japanese hand-drawn animes, tells the story of an sudden friendship towards the backdrop of conflict.
Set in a fantastical world, it follows Vincent, a younger glassblower, and Alliz, a violinist, whose bond is examined by the worlds they arrive from.
The Glassworker, Riaz’s debut function, premeired on the Annecy Worldwide Animation Movie Pageant this yr. It had a theatrical run in Pakistan in July. It’s the nation’s first hand-drawn animated function.
In a latest interview with The Hindu, Riaz spoke about his inspirations behind the movie. “I like Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, Mamoru Hosoda, Satoshi Kon, and Makoto Shinkai,” he stated.
In the meantime, India has chosen Kiran Rao’s satirical feminist comedy Laapataa Women to compete for Greatest Worldwide Characteristic on the Academy Awards.
The ultimate shortlist for the class shall be introduced by Academy voters in December.
